Celebration in honor of the feast of St. Joseph's Altar

St. Joseph’s Day is a traditional Sicilian/Italian feast day in honor of Saint Joseph, for preventing a famine during middle Ages. God through the intercessions of Saint Joseph saved the Sicilians from a severe drought.

Saint Joseph was born in Bethlehem and worked as a carpenter (Matthew 13:55 “Is not this the carpenter’s son?”) an occupation he later passed on to his Son (Mark 6:3” Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?”)

Today in continuing this Sicilian/Italian tradition, we invite our parish family and our community to share in this feast “La Festa di Tavola di San Giuseppe”. The evening will begin with the Rite of Blessing of the Saint Joseph’s Altar, which is comprised of three tiers symbolizing the Most Holy Trinity, continued with a program of music and a reenactment of Holy Family’s search for food and shelter. The altar will be laden with a banquet of many kinds of foods. In addition, the tiers will be filled with flowers, candles, figurines, symbolic breads, special pastries and many other traditional items. To adhere with the Lenten season’s obligation, a meatless spaghetti dinner will be served.

You will have the opportunity to purchase a wonderful selection of traditional Italian cookies, such as; Biscottis, Cuccidatis, Tanalluccis, Giugiulenis and Palermitanis made with a labor of love by our St. Ignatius parishioners.

With humility and compassion we invite you to break bread with our community. In the spirit of Saint Ignatius as “a people for others” we look forward to your generous donations, which will be distributed to the less fortunate in our area.

In the spirit of solidarity and to preserve the Sicilian/Italian heritage we ask that you wear red and join us for this very special Banquet.
