The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process by which adults and children/youth ages 7-17 become members of the Catholic Church.
What is the RCIA process?
This process begins with a period of inquiry, where those seeking to know more can meet informally with catechists (teachers) and ask any questions they have about God, faith, and/or the Catholic Church. Following this period of inquiry, those who wish to learn more may enter into a period of systematic study and prayer called the catechumenate. After spending time praying and reflecting on what they have learned, those who wish to come into the Catholic Church may request to recieve the sacraments of initiation - baptism (if unbaptized), Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.
How long does it take?
This process will look different for each person, because the call of the Holy Spirit is unique to everyone. For some, this process is a relatively short one; for others, it may take many months and even years. But the members of our RCIA ministry are committed to walking with each person that the Lord sends to us, for as long as their journey with us lasts. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (U.S. edition, 1988) reminds us: "The people of God, as represented by the local church, should understand...that the initiation of adults is the responsibility of all the baptized."
